Your car stereo in 3000GT Mitsubishi uses an auto-locking system so that whenever the battery is cut to the radio, it will be locked and will ask for code. Your car radio will be protected from unauthorized use with the help of this feature. However, if you need to disconnect the battery to make some repair in your one 3000GT auto, you will need to know the code entry instruction for car radio, so that you can use the stereo again.

1) Keep the trip odometer button pressed.

3) To display "OILSERVICE" or "INSPECTION", with "RESET" or "RE" let go of the button on the trip odometer.
4) Press again on the trip odometer button until "RESET" or "SOS" flashes.
5) While flashing, click again briefly on the button for the trip odometer to reset the maintenance interval.

7) The message "BRAKE FLUID" appears.
8) The display shows the clock symbol.

Guide to Satellite Navigation In-Car Sat Nav

Portable Sat Nav devices can be a good choice if you find yourself having to hire cars at home or abroad, or if you have to drive a variety of vehicles in your job, as they allow you to carry the device from car to car. However, they fall short in matching the accuracy, ease of use, display clarity (especially on road junctions) and cosmetic integration of the dedicated In-Car Navigation devices.

If you've read our short introduction to Satellite Navigation you will know that these devices make use of the Global Positioning System to calculate the position of your vehicle with a good degree of accuracy. As long as the car navigation receiver can read the position of at least three satellites, then by a process of mathematical triangulation it can work out where you are.

GPS is at the core of nearly all these devices, but added features improve both the accuracy and useability of navigational aids in the car, and it's these features that set apart the various types of Sat Nav devices now on the market.

Fixed or 'embedded' Sat Nav systems

Most fixed In-Car Satellite Navigation systems consist of a miniature computer connected to a CD, DVD or Data Card reader; a gyroscope; and a GPS receiver and antenna. A feed from the vehicle's electronics known as the 'speed pulse' supplies additional data to the navigation computer. The speed pulse feed and gyroscope are features that considerably improve the accuracy and reliability of fixed Sat Nav systems compared to the portable devices.

The fixed systems tend to have large, high-quality displays, often touch-sensitive and fold-away. This allows the device to neatly fit into the same space as a conventional in-dash CD player. Most will come with a remote controller and sophisticated mapping with advanced search facilities and a huge number of Points of Interest (POI) - these are useful places like petrol stations and bank ATMs, and leisure spots such as restaurants.

Inputting your destination is easy, either by speaking the pre-assigned name you've given to the address, or by entering the address or post code on the remote control, or by touchscreen. They all support the screen instructions with clear spoken directions delivered through the vehicle's own speaker system for best clarity.

Most fixed car navigation systems can also retrieve and decode realtime traffic information (via a TMC data feed - TMC stands for Traffic Message Channel) and automatically re-route you around traffic trouble spots.

Systems that use CD or DVD to deliver their mapping data will usually double as an entertainment system. Once the required mapping data is read into memory for a particular route or area, the reader is free to play other discs.

All-in-all these are the most accurate and easy-to-use Sat Nav systems for the car, but they do require professional installation. They are relatively expensive, but don't forget that in most cases you're also getting a CD or DVD player for entertainment too. And the whole system will fit perfectly into your car's environment - no trailing cables, no ugly and sometimes unreliable mounting brackets.

How does the Sat Nav benefit from the Speed Pulse feed and Gyroscope?

These are the two most significant aspects of fixed In-Car Sat Nav systems that set them apart from the portable devices in getting you from A to B with minimum fuss.

Receiving speed pulse information from the engine management system (or a speed pulse generator in the case of some older or diesel vehicles), allows the navigation device to know how far along the road the car has travelled.

Of course the triangulation of the satellite signals will allow the device to track the vehicle, as long as it can see the satellites, but having the speed pulse information provides even greater accuracy. And if the vehicle passes through areas where vertical visibility is restricted, such as between highrise buildings or steep hillsides, you won't be left stranded.

While the speed pulse data tells the system how far the vehicle has travelled, the Gyroscope provides information on which direction you're headed. Again, this gets added to the data from the satellites or, if there's no line of sight to the satellites, then the data from the Gyroscope and speed pulse does a good job of tracking you on the digital map until satellite reception is restored.

Thanks to cheaper production and falling prices of portable devices, 'Sat Nav' became the latest high-tech "must have" for UK consumers as far back as 2005. The demand gave rise to a big choice of models available from mostly non-specialist retailers. As the initial surge eased, so prices became even more appealing, while at the same time the technology and mapping software improved further, with more "driver's view" 3D mapping and extra detail on intersections and roundabouts.

The more sophisticated fixed or "embedded" in-car navigation systems have also come down in price but have nonetheless remained very much in the "serious user" bracket. These fixed Sat Nav systems offer a number of benefits over the portable devices, whilst losing out on the one big advantage of the latter - their portability and therefore ability to be moved from car to car, from yours to your partner's car, a hire car or a friend's car.

GPS Satellite Navigation - how does it work?

Global Positioning satellites are constantly circling the Earth (GPS stands for 'Global Positioning System'). Each follows a set path and speed around the globe and therefore, at any particular time, each satellite will be at a very precise location in the sky. Signals being constantly beamed to Earth from each satellite can be read by receiving equipment down below to very precisely position objects on the ground.

As long as the satellite receiver on the ground can read the position of at least three satellites, a process of mathematical triangulation allows it to calculate its own location. Portable Sat Nav devices generally rely entirely on GPS positioning technology along with sophisticated digital mapping.

The navigation device receives enough information from the satellites to provide a relatively accurate position on the ground, but digital mapping and some clever software is needed to synchronise the satellite signals and correct for slight errors. In this way, the Sat Nav device will show you on the road even if the satellite signals would have you motoring through the houses 30 feet to your right!

Most fixed In-Car Navigation systems will also include a gyroscope. This adds extra accuracy and becomes especially useful whenever satellite reception is impeded. The fixed systems also use a separate antenna that can be positioned for best reception. With the portable devices, it may be necessary to buy and mount an additional antenna if your vehicle has a heated or reflective windscreen.

In all cases, there is an ongoing cost to Sat Nav in the form of updated maps. Apart from any specific rental offers, there's no recurring cost - the maps you get are yours to keep and use for as long as you like - but of course new roads are built, roundabouts are added, road priorities change, and new postcode areas are added. You should ideally replace your map discs every couple of years, and the cost can be anything from £100 to over £400.

The GSM human-assisted option

There is another option which keeps the map centrally located and all you have in the car is a button on the dashboard which, when pressed for two seconds, connects you via GSM (mobile phone) with an operator who can talk plain English with you. He or she will send the journey plan to the box in your car by phone. You are then guided to your destination by very accurate voice instruction.

The annual subscription on this type of navigation equates to about the same as the CD-based Sat Nav units. The big plus is that the map is always up to date. This system also takes into account traffic jams and can be made to alert you to the location of speed cameras. Its use of the GSM phone system also allows the operator to assist in finding your vehicle if it has been stolen.

We all still have to deal with the threat of having our car stolen or broken in to, but things are much better than back in the early 1990s when car crime, including car theft and so-called joyriding, was a number one target for government action.

Initiatives were put into place to make people more aware of how to protect their vehicle and its belongings, and government pressure on the British insurance industry and car manufacturers led to a vast improvement in the quality and effectiveness of automotive security measures.

After media coverage showed just how easy it was to break into the average vehicle, in many cases using little more than a bent coat hanger to pull up the internal door lock button, the automotive and insurance industries responded by the setting up of not only guidelines but strict testing procedures to assess and improve the level of vehicle security. This covered both vehicle design (no more easy-lift door buttons!) and active devices such as engine immobilisers and car alarm systems.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, car alarm systems were notorious for not only being relatively ineffective and easily bypassed, but also prone to false triggering. While some of the seemingly 'false alarms' were actually the result of thieves rocking cars and banking on the fact that owners would get fed-up and switch off their alarms, there was a genuine problem of noise pollution. This gave rise to complaints that either prevented people from setting their alarms or led to confused car owners not fitting one at all.

Car security has come a long way in the last ten years, especially in terms of effectiveness and reliability. It takes many forms - from immobilisation and car alarm systems, to tracking devices and advanced anti-hijack measures.

Few security devices that can be DIY-fitted by motorists themselves are effective. Locking wheel nuts offer specific protection for high value alloy wheels and are a must-have, and a good steering wheel lock provides some visible deterrent and may slow down an attempted theft of the vehicle. But DIY-fitted car alarms are easily defeated by all but the most rookie thief or joyrider.

It is the professionally fitted car security systems that are by far the most effective. Many insurance companies offer discounts where a Thatcham-approved security system has been fitted, but all will demand a certificate showing that the system has been fitted by an accredited professional installer.

Modern cars are now being delivered with insurance-approved security devices fitted on the production line. This is the car manufacturer's way of showing concern for their customers and most do provide a valuable deterrent. But manufacturing cost considerations usually dictate that the supplied car security system will be no more than adequate, and there is often a drawback to these factory-fitted devices.

Since most of these are usually clones, fitted in the same way on the production line, once a career thief has worked out how to overcome one, he has the key to overcome them all. Modern factory-fitted security systems are effective but only up to a point.

Given enough time and determination, any anti-theft device can be overcome. The key is to make it as tricky and time-consuming for the thief as possible, as they will become increasingly more anxious about being caught in the act, especially if you sensibly parked in a well lit area where there is some traffic passing by. And it's no longer a case of a siren simply being ignored. Paging systems can alert you of a triggered alarm status by SMS Text message to a mobile phone. And if they do manage to overcome the anti-theft system, the thief could also be up against a hidden 'after-theft' system that tracks them and allows the police to pin-point the vehicle's exact location.

Aftermarket devices fitted by MMSA members can also offer added comfort features, such as automatic window and roof closure, remote boot opening and remote headlight switch-on.

General advice on protecting your vehicle and its contents

There are some basic measures you can take to reduce the chances of becoming a target for car crime. Many are common sense but worth remembering all the same - it's all about getting into the habit of being security conscious, so it becomes automatic:

Lock the doors and arm the alarm whenever you leave your vehicle, even for a short time. The opportunist thief likes nothing more than seeing someone rush into the newsagent or petrol station with the keys still in the ignition, or a laptop on the passenger seat. Get in to the habit of never leaving the car vulnerable and you'll be much less likely to accidentally leave it unlocked or unarmed.
Remove valuable items or place them out of view in the boot or in a lockable glove-box. Remove the cradle of a portable Sat Nav, not just the Sat Nav itself, and wipe away the mark left by the suction cup. It's inconvenient yes, but worth the effort, especially if you've parked in an area you're not familiar with.
Periodically check that all your doors lock when you operate the central locking, and check the driver's door each time you leave the car.
Park in a well-lit street or in a secure car park.
Never leave your keys on view, on a pub table for example, or close to a window or the letterbox at home. If you play sports, make sure keys are stored in a truly secure locker or with someone you know.
Lock your doors while driving and roll up the windows when stopping at lights, especially in towns and cities.

Mercedes-Benz apple navigation system

Apple (AAPL) is building a mercedes navigation system for Mercedes-Benz set to debut in early 2009, with more general availability about six months later. While it sounds cool, I suspect that it's actually more speculation than fact. Yes, Apple has been working on integrating Google mapping services into its products. Yes, Apple has been working with the car companies on integrating iPod and presumably iPhone functions into cars. Yes, Apple is probably working on GPS functions for the iPhone to help it comply with US 911-emergency locating requirements. But Apple actually doing an in-dash GPS navigation system as an exclusive for Mercedes just sounds wrong because:

1. Mercedes has unique interfaces. While most of the auto industry has standardized on DIN sizes and connections for car accessories, Mercedes doesn't do that, preferring to link everything on a fiber-optic network. As a result, interfacing an Apple GPS to a Mercedes really won't help it penetrate any other manufacturers since it will have to change the electrical interfaces completely to make it work with other auto makers.

2. Mercedes engineers a completely integrated experience. All of the Mercedes electronics talk to one another to ensure the driver gets the best experience. So directions from the GPS don't just come out on the in-dash console, they also appear below or as part of the speedometer display and, when voice directions are used, lower the volume on the radio or CD player while it is speaking. Similarly, the Tele-aid safety system needs to be able to pull the car location from the navigation system for safety and concierge services. This level of integration would require Apple's GPS unit to be aware of other Mercedes-installed electronics in the car -- and again wouldn't be compatible with other makers vehicles.

So what's our take? I believe that Apple may be working with Mercedes for an iPhone integration port, similar to the iPod integration ports that it has negotiated with other car manufacturers. And given the time frame specified, this would likely be for an iPhone version 2 or 3, which would have GPS capabilities. But given both Apple's and Mercedes' insistence on creating unique branded experiences, I expect both companies to retain their independence, and to resist any temptation to build "Apple inside" your Mercedes navigation system.

Portable Satellite Navigation became the latest high-tech "must have" for UK consumers as far back as 2005, and the huge demand created a big choice of Sat Nav models within a short time. As the initial surge later eased, prices became even more attractive and the technology and mapping software also improved further, with more "driver's view" 3D style mapping and extra detail on intersections and roundabouts.

Apart from price, the ease of fitting and their portability make these devices especially attractive to the average motorist. Unlike fitted in-car navigation systems, they can be transferred easily from car to car - great if you hire cars for business or on holiday, or if your partner occasionally makes a longer trip in their own car.

While in-car Sat Nav systems need to be professionally installed, portable systems often come with a screen mounted arm and cigarette lighter power cable, making fitting quick and easy, if somewhat untidy.

These portable units tend to have smaller screens, smaller map memory and a less convenient user interface compared to fitted systems. That said, several do give clear 3D colour mapping; the embedded memory capacities are rising as data chip costs decrease; and they are generally easy to setup after the first few trial runs. Where they tend to be less user friendly is during the journey if you need to make quick changes.

The digital mapping may be more simplified (with fewer 'Points of Interest' or POIs) but is generally good, since it all tends to come from the same software mapping companies. You may need to be clued up on how to connect the device to a computer in order to load mapping data into its memory, since they don't have a built-in CD or DVD reader. Some may incorporate an external data reader, such as SD card.

Most provide spoken directions but the voice quality may be relatively poor because of the small built-in amplifier and speaker.

The ease of fitting is clearly an advantage since there's no (or very little) fitting cost involved. However, as well as giving a rather untidy appearance and being somewhat prone to detaching itself in strong sunlight, the typical glass-mounted arm makes a very visible target for thieves.

Portable navigation units have replaced the car stereo as the most desirable item for the opportunist thief. Unlike a CD player they are neither difficult to remove or protected by a security code or removable panel.

Even if you religiously remove the device from the arm and carry it with you (not always convenient as some are more portable than others in terms of their shape) the hawk-eyed thief who sees the arm on the windscreen may well break in anyway, assuming that the device will be in the glove-box. Our advice is to always remove the arm from the windscreen when you park.

Summary

In terms of their basic navigational performance, these Sat Nav devices are certainly impressive, up to a point. They really do help to make driving less stressful until, that is, you grow to rely on it too much.

It happens to most owners - these things are so nice that you sometimes disengage your own built-in navigation (that is, the one in your head!). If you switch off your own common sense, these things can have you driving up roads normally only navigated by cows!

Such instances are not normally down to poor GPS reception or mapping, but simply the unit choosing the shortest or theoretically quickest route. But these portable units do have some performance limitations.

They generally don't incorporate a gyroscope (this provides information on which direction you're headed, independent of satellite reception) or accept a speed pulse feed (this monitors the car's speed and therefore how far you've travelled since the last GPS position) and so they rely entirely on good satellite reception.

Also, be aware that if your vehicle has a heated or reflective windscreen, you will very probably need to buy and mount a separate internal or external antenna.

A demonstration of any one of the number of fixed Sat Nav systems will highlight the restrictions of the portable devices. Their smaller displays, less friendly user-interface, slower calculation time, occasional GPS glitches and lack of live traffic information (TMC) updates become important factors if you expect to use a navigation system on many of your journeys, especially in business travelling.

But the thing about these portable devices is that they have successfully introduced a huge number of people to in-car Sat Nav and, once you've tried it, you won't want to live without it.

The car battery

The battery is at the center of the load circuit. Its operation is simple, when you start the car, the starter takes the energy of your battery. Once the engine running, it drives the alternator which provides electrical power the car and recharges the battery.

The alternator is an AC generator driven by a belt connected to the engine. This generator produces alternating current when the engine is running, even at idle. A controller is positioned at the current output of the alternator to regulate the current product.
All parts are dependent on each other. In case of failure of the alternator, the battery drains quickly. In case of battery failure, the driver is unable to start the car.

Maximize the life of your battery.

There is one thing that the battery does not like winter. In the early cold snaps, a battery in very good condition loses 35% of its capacity. Winter is the time of year where electrical equipment are the most stressed (headlights, fog lights, heating, electric defrost, etc..) Many opportunities to put your flat battery. If your radio does not turn on, check the fuse panel refer to the vehicle owners manual for radio fuse location.

If radio turns on, but you have "No Audio" check that the fader switch in center console is plugged in. This may require lifting the wooden console panel.

If your AM is poor, check the ground connection at your antenna and also confirm that all mast sections of the antenna are extended.

Installing and Removing marcedes COMAND & Audio on models E & CLS

Firstly remove the wooden surround panel around the gearstick. On the W211 E class you just pull up the front edge (it is hooked in at the rear edge), and the whole panel comes up.

On the W219 CLS it is easier to leave the wood surround in place and pull up the metal surround of the actual gear lever, then you can reach through the hole and push the catches (you can feel one at each end of the front edge of the trim) whilst pulling the wood trim up from the front.

Once the panel is pulled up, you can see a knurled plastic nut at the bottom of the gearknob itself, rotate anti-clockwise, unplug all the wires connected to the panel and then pull the gearknob upwards and remove the panel.

Now you need to release the catches that hold the ashtray in place, there are two and they clip slightly forward using a screwdriver, whist applying pressure with the screwdriver pull the ashtray upward.

Unplug the blue ashtray light connector and the black cigarette lighter power connector which pulls out at right angles to the body of the cigarette lighter (i.e from the side of the end of the cigarette lighter). The black connector in the picture below is the cigarette lighter power and the blue connector is the ashtray lamp connector.

Now remove the 2 screws that hold the lower control panel (the one with the CD changer compartment) in place: -

Unclip the connectors, on cars with no CD changer there is just one connector (the one with lots of wires on the left of the picture below), on cars with CD changer there is also a fibre optic connector (latch on the left of the connector) and the CD power connector (3 wires) to the right of it. Note that if you want to install or remove the CD changer, you should open the CD changer compartment first and then remove the LCP connector (the one on the left) so that it is open for you to work on it.

Now you can remove the whole section, it is easiest to move the gear stick to Drive position when removing it.

Now undo the two screws that go up into the base of the Audio unit, just turn them until they stop turning.

Now you can just slide out the Audio / COMAND unit and disconnect the connections at the rear.

Reassembly is just the reverse of removal, remember to test that the CD changer compartment opens and closes before you tighten the screws up - in order for that to work the AGW needs to be connected (which you may have disconnected if you are fitting COMAND)

Format your key in FAT32

Unless you have an iPod compatible car stereo directly, it should read that the PC formats: NTFS and FAT32. The problem of NTFS is that Mac does not know natively written on, unless you use a utility such as NTFS-3G MacFuse or Paragon NTFS for Mac.
Advantage of FAT32: it is run by Mac and here's how:

- Select the tab "Partition"
Select the USB drive (the first icon that is to say that showing the key size)
- Choose "Partition A" for field "Volume Configuration" (do not leave this field to "Current" if the other fields are dimmed)

The Blaupunkt calculator asks you to enter 10 digits from the radio made up as follows:
BPX754X1934286
1 ). The first three numbers "754" are found in the model number of the stereo.
2). First find the paper label on the right hand side of the radio.
3). All Blaupunkt radio's have a part number starting with a number like 7 643
4). Followed by further numbers like 754 010 (7643 754 010).

Make a note of the three numbers in the position where 754 (Underlined Above) is.
5). The radio also has a serial number printed on a label and engraved into the chassis of the radio.
HINT:
The serial number may look like this: BP7754Y1682854
You will notice that the three numbers from the model are also found
just in front of the letter ( Y ) in the middle of the serial number
Please Note: This letter may be different on each radio.

6). Now having all 10 digits (7541682854), Enter them into the calculator Once you are happy with the code entered, Press the 'Calculate Code' button. The calculator will respond by displaying the Factory Programmed Unlock Code for this unit.
For Vauxhall/OPEL Model SC202 ( C ); Model number 7 641 850 620 With a serial
number of GM1202N4825428 engraved into the Chassis of the radio on the right hand
side.
Enter the numbers 8504825428 into the calculator to find this radio's security code.
NOTE: On models manufactured before 1991, then take the last three
Numbers of the model, 7 641 850 620 such as (620)
Two codes are displayed l.e 0548 and 6548
the first code (0548) is for use with older units which only accept a "1 " or a "0" as the
first digit the second code (6548) is for use with more recent units.

Ford M Series :

Find the model number on the radio which should look like:

M154656

Enter the digits after the M into the calculator then click "5" on the virtual stereo.
To exit the program click the On/0ff or Volume button

Ford A/L/C :

Find the model number as above on the radio which should look like:

A154654
L155648
C456456 Or similar

Enter it into the calculator and select the appropriate button to the left

Clarion :

Enter the last four digits of the BARCODE If there are 2 barcodes then use the lower one

Volvo / Hyundai :

Find the links/Diodes (usually on the reverse of the stereo) and enter the sequence used to generate the radios code.
